Villa Amara began in 2016 when Nok and James, she grew up two streets away in Bophut, he first came to Samui to dive and never quite left, took on a tired old shophouse near the water and spent a year rebuilding it by hand. They wanted the opposite of a resort: somewhere with only a handful of rooms, where the coffee is proper, the garden is real, and someone actually knows your name by the second morning.
Ten years on it's still just the two of them and a small local team. Every room is a little different, furnished with rattan, teak and the sort of textiles you find in the island's Sunday markets rather than a catalogue. Breakfast is mango, sticky rice and eggs however you like them, served in the garden under the frangipani.
We're a two-minute walk from the lanterns and seafood grills of Fisherman's Village, and a thirty-second one from the sand, but tucked far enough back that all you hear at night is the geckos. The Space
Every room is air-conditioned, spotless and quietly comfortable, with fast wifi, a rain shower and our own cotton linen. Rates include garden breakfast and use of the pool, bikes and kayaks.
Bright and breezy with hand-laid patterned tiles and two proper single beds, our favourite for friends travelling together.
Our biggest room, opening straight onto the garden with a rattan sitting area, a king bed and a slow morning waiting outside the door.
